Make Earth Day Everyday

By: Erica Wery

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated onearth-day-5Rs.jpg April 22 worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first observed in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.

Many people assume that Earth Day is all about large group gatherings or activists protesting pollution. There is much more that can be done, and is done during Earth Day, and you yourself can participate in the smallest of ways.
While some people may choose to be more vocal about the need to protect our environment, you can participate by simply appreciating what nature already has to offer you. We cannot truly protect something, such as the environment, unless we establish an appreciation for it first.

On this year’s Earth Day, take a moment to appreciate the simplest of things in nature. Hang up a birdhouse, plant a windowsill herb garden, or clean out those neglected flower beds from last fall. These tasks will not earn you the Nobel Peace Prize, but they will earn you a sense of personal satisfaction and accomplishment. If you are feeling more ambitious and creative, please keep reading.

Wooden pallets are just one of the harmful materials filling up the country’s landfills every day. Though strides have been made to keep materials such as aluminum cans and plastic bottles out of our nation’s dumps, millions of wood pallets continue to pile up.

Statistics vary regarding how many million wood pallets now reside in landfills. Some estimates claim that as many as 200 million wood pallets are thrown into U.S. landfill facilities every year. Of those that find their way to the dump, over half were only used once before they were discarded.

pallet 2Besides using leftover pallet as fire wood, there are dozens of alternatives available for “upcycling” or reusing these wood pallets for useful purposes. One of the most creative and innovative repurposing options is for gardening. Wooden pallets make excellent planters either laid flat or propped up against a wall vertically. If woodworking and building is your forté, then dismantling the pallets and utilizing the wood for building something new may just tickle your fancy.
