The veterans at Eastern Nebraska Veteran's Home (ENVH) in Bellevue, NE enjoyed a meal on December 19, 2015, made and served by members of Zest No. 296 from Omaha, NE. This lunch was a way to say thank you to the veterans for their service.
No. 296 had a relationship with this group because Vice President Al Divoky is a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), where the group rents a space in the DAV Hall for monthly meetings. No. 296 volunteered to serve the monthly meal for the veterans in December.

Vets were presented with gift bags from Zest Lodge.
Preparations began at the Christmas party meeting where members prepared Western Fraternal Life bags filled with warm socks, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, playing cards donated by Harrahs Casino, pencils, lip balm, candy, and oranges. Later, members prepared the food items. John and Marilyn Slezak made a hearty beef stew, which they tested beforehand to know how much to make for the 20 veterans and guests. Lillian Komor and Deb Dugan made brownies. Al Divoky made cream puffs. Cheryl Stout made edible candy reindeer decorations with her first grade students, which were inspired by an idea she found on Pinterest.

On the day of the meal, several No. 296 members joined with the DAV Auxiliary members to serve the lunch. Veterans were pleased and commented that the food was flavorful and hot. Some even asked that the recipe be sent to the ENVH.
Marilyn Slezak, No. 296 secretary, commented, "Our members enjoyed sitting and talking to the vets. They had a good feeling about seeing these men and women who had served in the military enjoying a good meal and gift bag." Further, the meal was an opportunity for involving members in a new way.
The members of No. 296 plan to do this activity again, and are talking with the DAV Auxiliary about working on more collaborations in the future.
