Have you every wanted to do something different than donate money to help our troops? It may be fun or more personal to send a package to our military men and women. Do you know what to send, or who to send it to? There are plenty of websites out there that specialize in sending things to the troops. Here are a couple of suggestions:

  1. Go to www.supportourtroops.org, then click on programs. Under the care packages section, click on more info. This gives you a specific list of items you can send.
    • Please send only first class, new, unopened, safety-sealed goods for America's finest.
    • Please include your name, address, and phone number in case they need to get hold of you about the shipment. Also, be sure your name, address, and phone appear legibly on the outside of the box.
    • Please include a printout of a digital picture of your lodge or school, and any notes about why you are sending the care package so the troops can know how much we really love, respect, and appreciate them.
    • Cards, letters, etc., need to be unsealed and ready for inspection. No glitter please.

Please follow the directions on their website regarding specifically requested items and rules. Send packages to Support Our Troops, PO Box 70, Daytona Beach, FL 32115-0070.

  1. Another website you can go to is www.operationgratitude.com/wishlist/.
    • You can send care packages to the troops or to veterans. There is a separate wish list for Purple Heart care packages. Directions include filling out a donation form for each large envelope or box. The form is located at https://www.operationgratitude.com/donor_form.pdf.

Ship items along with the donation form to: Operation Gratitude, Forward Operating Base, 21100 Lassen Street, Chatsworth, CA 91311.
You could also write a letter to our troops. If you don't know what to say, here is a flyer to get you started: https://www.operationgratitutde.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/LetterWritingFlyer-1.pdf.

  1. If you want to make a donation, but don't have time to do a care package, the USO has an excellent program that shows you exactly what care packages you are purchasing. You can go to their website and choose from gift packages that they recommend, and they take care of the rest.

Go to https://www.uso.org/take-action/ways-to-give. About halfway down the page, click on "Click Here to Shop the USO Wishbook" and you can select a gift by interest, recipient, or price. They have some very nice options, such as comfort food packages, family fun days, books for the bases, long-distance bedtime stories, or supporting a caregiver. These are specific packages the USO has put together for care and support to military families.

Again, there are plenty of websites out there that are helping people get involved. Additional ones to check out are: Homes for our Troops at www.hfotusa.org, Fisher House Foundation at www.fisherhouse.org, and Operation Homefront at www.operationhomefront.net.
