The Strathcona, MN community looks forward to the Memorial Day picnic held every year by members of Boleslav Jablonsky No. 219. It is an opportunity for neighbors and friends to get together for the day. Attendance is always very good.
This year, members, the YELL! group, and other youth held a bake sale, along with the picnic, in order to raise funds to paint the interior of their lodge hall. They also added a basket raffle which raised money for the lodge scholarship fund.
Lodge youth members began work by baking kolache. Secretary Marvel Pesek commented, "They had a good time while they were learning new skills." In addition to the baked goods, the basket raffle was filled with baking supplies, cookbooks, coffee, mugs, dish clothes, and towels.
The community had an overwhelming response to the bake sale. The kolache went very fast. Pesek commented, "We could have sold even more. We sold out in a short amount of time."
The bake sale and raffle was made more successful through the Members in Action program with Western. The lodge used the funds provided to advertise the event through mailed-out notecards and ads in two local papers. In addition, they bought signs, and groceries for baking. Pesek said, "Members in Action is a good program to help serve our community and raise funds for needy causes."
The lodge's participation at the picnic also helped promote Western Fraternal Life. The members handed out brochures to customers who bought baked goods and they wore their YELL! shirts to promote the lodge's youth group. Member Programs Manager Kelsey Logan stated, "We like to see members showing their lodge pride in the community. It helps non-members know what the lodge does and can result in more people deciding to get involved and eventually become members themselves."
