Hurricane Relief

Hurricane Relief

Apr 26, 2018

Last year was a particularly difficult one for areas affected by hurricanes. In response, Western Fraternal Life and its members stepped up efforts to help people recover and get their lives back together.

Lodges and Western's Home Office both organized independent collections to send to places like Texas. There was a need for basic supplies and monetary assistance. The Home Office alone was able to collect two full car loads of supplies.

Western also spread the word about the Disaster Relief Benefit, which is a member benefit it has offered for a long time. At other times when a large-scale disaster has hit, there have been similar pushes to make members aware that they can apply for monetary assistance.

Applications were approved in 2017, all with damages to their property related to Hurricane Harvey. Each member then received $500 from the Home Office to help them get back on their feet.

Because Hurricane Harvey was so devastating, an additional collection was taken up. The Home Office reached out to lodges to voluntarily donate to a fund that would increase the monetary benefit to members affected by Hurricane Harvey. The lodges gave a total of $1,860 in response, and this money was evenly distributed to the six members who were awarded funds.

Member Susan Powell, of League City, TX, was one of the members who received the benefit. League City is located between Houston and the Gulf of Mexico, which suffered major flooding in the hurricane. Powell described the flooding in her neighborhood as being up to the mailboxes, and that people were being rescued by boat. Months later, this devastation continues to impact the area, and everyone is putting in a lot of effort to rebuild. It is a very emotional, long recovery ahead.

“Any amount of money was helpful to us. We, like many others, thought we had property insurance protection, but there were flaws,” Powell said. She suffered a significant financial burden. “With some of the money, we were able to purchase a dehumidifer, fan, and shop-vac to work on getting the water out of our home.” She relayed that although she lives in the home, there is a lot of work ahead.

The Disaster Relief Benefit is available each year to any Western member who suffers personal property loss as a result of flood, hurricane, earthquake, wildfire, or tornado. Up to $500 is then paid to that member.

“This type of benefit is what sets Western Fraternal apart from other life insurance companies. We are proud to be able to offer benefits like this, and more proud that we have members willing to help other members in a time of need,” commented Vice President Don Nieland.
