April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month and we want to honor our members. Western member volunteers go beyond the expectation of traditional volunteers. They spend their time on volunteer endeavors that better their communities and provide their talents to charitable causes every day. Through the years, I have been humbled to read about the contributions of our members to fellow members, citizens in need, and vulnerable populations. Lodges share their giving spirit by organizing fundraising events, like the garage sale for Grayson Crisis Center by No. 446, providing support for Big Brothers Big Sisters that several lodges take part in each year, or hosting bake sales for a transplant organization by No. 127.

Large events are valuable, but often it is the many small actions that have a combined impact for our member’s communities. I truly believe that our members are the backbone of many small communities. They discreetly donate tens of thousands of dollars a year (over $60,000 in 2017) to local fire departments, hospitals, libraries, and more. Without those monetary donations, not to mention the thousands of in-kind donations, many local charities would not be able to provide for their communities.

Without our member’s commitment to volunteerism, Western would be just another insurance company. While our members would rather quietly work without much notice, we proudly boast of the generosity of our members. Why? Because they deserve recognition for their tremendous voluntary efforts across the country. Members, we thank you for your incredible contributions of time, talent, and resources that you do each and every day. Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month.
