Members in Action is a benefit from Western that funds the supplies, services, and promotional materials that members need to make member community events a success. This year, members were creative in hosting events that were fun for many people. In most cases, it was not only a chance to get together, but a chance to make a difference by promoting good causes.
Member Connie Johnson applied for Members in Action to aide Run to Rescue on August 10 at Czechland Lake in Prague, NE. Run to Rescue is a fun run for all ages, down the old railroad track going all the way to the ghost town of Rescue, NE.
There is a 1 mile, 5K, and 9 mile run or walk. Afterward, everyone was treated to kolache, water or Gatorade, bananas, and oranges, and were entered into a prize drawing. There were over 400 runners. The Prague Volunteer Fire Department provided support during the event and proceeds were given to the Prague Rescue Squad to purchase future equipment.
Members in Action sponsored promotional event ads in local publications.
Member Craig Prochaska applied for Members in Action in order to support the Relay for Life of Rock River event on August 2 at Watertown High School in Watertown, WI. The event raised money for the American Cancer Society.
Activities included a silent auction, VFW Color Guard, singers, obstacle course, walking the track, kid's activities, honoring survivors of cancer, food, and fun. Members from Black River Falls lodge helped and participated in the relay.
Members in Action funds sponsored a blow-up obstacle course for the kids.
The South Central Nebraska Czech Festival was held in Hastings, NE on June 1. Members of No. 389, Western, NE applied for Members in Action in order to make the community event a success.
No. 389's YELL! group set-up a table representing the lodge with goodie bags and Czech sheets. There was Polka music, a bake sale, vendors, demonstrations, and a Czech meal.
The YELL! group loves volunteering at these Czech festivals because they get to promote Czech heritage while enjoying activities and tasty food. More information about the festival was included in the December 2019 issue of the Fraternal Herald.
Members in Action funds paid for ad spots on the All Star Polka Show, Western promotional items, and food for the meal.
Members of No. 44, Hayward, MN, applied for Members in Action to aid the annual Czech Fest in Glenville, MN on September 7. The lodge puts on the festival and proceeds go toward restoring the historic 110-year-old Brick Hall, and a small percentage is donated to a community organization.
Members wore their Western shirts and YELL! members helped out at the bake sale, kids corner, and served pizza. The festival also included music, a pin ceremony for 50 and 75-year members, Czech food, and silent auction. Members in Action funds supported picnic table rentals, food, and advertising.
Member Anne Dirkman, No. 20, Whitelaw, WI applied for Members in Action to aid a community fundraising event for Ric Cummings at Bill's Bar and Grill on October 19. The event included food, a bake sale, raffles, and silent auction. Funds from Members in Action paid for food.
Unfortunately, Ric was unable to attend the benefit due to his health issues, but it was heartwarming to see his friends, family, neighbors, and former classmates come together to support him in his struggle against cancer. Dirkman noted that Members in Action is very member-friendly and has straight-forward instructions.
Member Dale Hayek (No. 389, Western, NE) applied for Members in Action to support the Dorchester Community Foundation's open-house for the new splash pad on July 14 in Dorchester, NE. Several hundred people enjoyed the event. Attractions included seeing the new splash pad, eating ribs and pulled pork, and an ice cream social.
Members in Action funds paid for items related to the meal. Dale Hayek and other members of No. 389 were helpful in organizing and volunteering at the event.
Members of No. 153, Jennings, KS, participated in the annual Highway 36 Treasure Hunt. Approximately 30 volunteers baked 75 dozen kolache and sold them during the event. Funds raised from the sale benefited the History Building Preservation Committee.
