Protect Yourself From Scams

Scams target people of all backgrounds, ages, and income levels across the world. There's no one group of people who are more likely to become a victim of a scam, all of us may be vulnerable to a scam at some time.
It is often hard to tell a legitimate business from a scam. Here are a few tips to help you navigate common problems.
- When dealing with uninvited contacts from people or businesses, whether it's over the phone, by mail, email, in person, or on a social networking site, always consider the possibility that the approach may be a scam.
- Know who you're dealing with. If you are not familiar with the business or person who is contacting you, search for them online and ask your friends if they have experience with them. If you receive a communication from a friend, call and verify that the friend was the sender.
- Do not open suspicious texts, pop-up windows, or click on links or attachments in emails. Delete the emails. If unsure, verify the identity of the contact through an independent source, such as a phone book or online search where you can reply through a means other than the email that was sent.
- Secure your personal information. Shred unneeded documents with personal information. Be very careful about how much personal information you share on social media sites. Keep your passwords and pin numbers in a safe place.
- Do not use the same password for multiple accounts. Include a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols in your passwords. Don’t share your passwords with anyone. Consider using a password manager.
- Be careful when shopping online. Use trusted websites and avoid public Wi-Fi. Check your bank and credit card statements regularly.
