Our September 9 meeting was held at The Special Restaurant. Members enjoyed great food, friends, and a good time.
On August 21, we hosted an ice cream and cake social to celebrate our 90th anniversary. The Home Office provided postcard invitations which were sent out to members. Our thanks to Debbie Dugan and Mia and Kaitlyn Masilko for helping serve the ice cream and cake. Also, thanks to Kim Lee for decorating the guest table and to Sandy Hayek for table decorations and door prizes.
It was a great opportunity to talk about our lodge and the good times that members have shared for over 90 years.
On June 10, members served a picnic lunch in honor of Flag Day at the New Visions Center for vets. Twenty-five vets were served hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans, and cookies prepared and served by members. John and Marilyn Slezak helped by making 25 lbs. of hamburger patties. This is our fourth year doing the event. The vets always enjoy and appreciate having a home-cooked meal brought in by us.

The May 50 and 75-year banquet was very successful. We had three 75-year members receive their pins.
The Scholarship Committee reported two applicants, Kira Wedel and Michael Baker. It will be awarded in September.
We will again work with the DAV to make lunch for the vets from the Eastern Nebraska Veteran’s Home on December 17. We will make gift bags. Members can donate items to be included, like ChapStick, socks, small soaps, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, or anything you feel would be appropriate.
Members approved a monetary donation to the Assumption/Guadalupe Parish to help with cost for the weekly breakfast.
The NE State Meeting will be in Milligan on August 25. Members attending will be Ernie Wesolowski, Lillian Komor, Dorothy Mengedogt, and John and Marilyn Slezak.
Our September 18 meeting will be dinner out at the Special Restaurant. It will be Dutch treat. We will collect items for the Nebraska Humane Society. Our children’s Halloween party will be on October 18. We will provide pizza and members should bring sides and non-perishable items for the food bank.
We had a nice turn out for our 50 and 75-year member banquet on May 15. Thanks to Rich and Sandy Hayek for their hard work and a well-planned banquet. President John Slezak presented Larry Divoky, Geraldine Duda, and Dennis Koubsky with 75-year pins.
Thanks to Louis Sevek, and wife Pat, for used eye glasses, box tops, cancelled postage stamps, and greeting card fronts. Ernie Wesolowski will deliver used stamps to Boys Town. Lillian Komor will take eyeglasses to Lion’s Club and the greeting card fronts and box tops to St. Joan of Arc School.
Get-well cards were sent to several people.

Members met April 17 at the DAV Hall. Greeting card fronts were collected and donated to St. Joan of Arc School for their school projects, along with Betty Crocker box tops. Used eye glasses were donated to the Lion’s Club. Thanks for the donations.

An indoor picnic will be held in June. We will have an ice cream social on August 21. All members are invited to our anniversary party.
The audit committee (Dorothy Mengedoht, Frances Rhia, Lillian Komor, and Ernie Weslowski) met at the DAV Hall on February 13 to review records.
We extend sympathy to the family of Gladys Korisko Velehradsky.
We will have a fried chicken dinner on April 17 at 6 p.m. Members bring sides. We will work on a planned event for Join Hands Day.

Member Michael Baker received a scholarship at our meeting. He is studying Engineering at the University of NE-Omaha. Michael thanked members and said the scholarship will help him as he pursues his education.
Kira Wedel was also a lodge scholarship recipient. She is the granddaughter of John and Marilyn Slezak and attends Kansas University. Kira is studying design and graphic arts.
Members served and prepared a luncheon for vets from NE Home in Bellevue on December 18. Vets also received a treat sack.
Please save your greeting and Christmas card fronts and bring your scissors for this project. We will send the card fronts to the St. Jude Foundation.
We had a Christmas party and meeting on December 19. Officers were installed and a moment of silence was held for Jerry Calta, Debra Fitzgerald, and Max Snowdon. We extend our sympathies to their families.
Members collected and donated money to Make-A-Wish Foundation. Scholarship donations were made by Al Divoky, Fran Riha, and Dan Stout.

In December, our lodge served dinner to vets from Eastern NE Vet’s Home at the DAV Hall. Vets were given a treat bag prepared by members. Officers were installed in December as well.
There are no meetings until April 17. The audit will be February 17 at Ernie’s home.
Members met October 17 at the DAV Hall. A moment of silence was held for deceased members. The State Meeting was discussed and we thanked members who volunteered.
On November 21, we had a Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Members brought sides to share and Toys for Tots.
December 19 will be our Christmas party. No meetings are held in January, February, or March.
A donation was made to the scholarship fund from Fran Riha, John Slezak, and Elsie Snowdon. Our condolences to Terry Hynek and family on the loss of his father. A card was sent from our lodge. Get-well cards were sent to other members.
Members met at Lansky’s for dinner on September 19. Our election of officers and chairmen will be in November, with installation in December. Think about taking on an officer/chairmen position for your lodge.
We will also have a Thanksgiving dinner with members bringing sides in November. Bring Toys for Tots items as well.
December is the Christmas party with members bringing sides and canned goods for the pantry.
Gladys Velehradsky was presented her certificate of Honorary Membership by Ernie Wesolowski and John and Marilyn Slezak.

Eight members attended the State Convention. Several questions were asked of Don Nieland. The resolution committee was abolished. Thanks to No. 45 and our members for a great Convention. Barbara Kohles greeted delegates and Kim Lee handled the drawing. Everyone received prizes from Ernie Wesolowski. See you in Milligan next August.
Cash donations were collected for flood victims.
Members met August 15. Our ice cream social was a success and we were happy to have No. 45 attend. Thanks to members who stayed to clean as a rain storm approached.
Bob Riha and Mike Lantz were guest speakers. Mike has been blind since birth and learned braille. He did a presentation on blindness. He came to Omaha to attend a Radio Club Convention. We hope to have him as a guest again.
We sang Happy Birthday to Fran Riha on her 90th birthday. Max and Elsie Snowden celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Donations were made to St. Jude’s Hospital. Elsie and Max Snowdon and Dorothy Mengedoht made donations to our scholarship fund. Scholarship applicants were presented their money at the September meeting by Frances Riha. Upcoming charities were discussed.
October 17 is our pizza party. Bring canned goods for the food pantry and sides for the party. November 21 is Toys for Tots. December 19 is the Christmas party for kids. We’ll have a ham dinner, please bring sides. We will collect for Make-A-Wish as well. If you have or know of anyone that would give an interesting presentation at a future meeting, contact an officer.

On Flag Day, there were nine members who helped serve dinner to the vets at New Visions.

The District 1 State Meeting will be September 30 at Holy Ghost Church basement (53rd and Q St. in Omaha, NE).
On August 15, we will have our annual ice cream social. We provide the ice cream. Members bring toppings, cake, or cookies. Mike Lantz will be our guest speaker and will discuss blindness.
On September 19, we will meet for a Dutch treat at Lanskys (4601 S. 50th St., Suite 200) at 6 p.m.
On October 17, we will have our Halloween pizza party. Put on a costume and join us. We will collect canned goods for the food bank. Please remember to bring used eye glasses for the Lion’s Club.
On May 16, members and guests met at Johnny’s Cafe to recognize and celebrate our 50 and 75-year members. A big thanks goes to Sandy and Rich Hayek for all their efforts to make this party a success.
There was discussion on the Flag Day picnic, held June 10, with New Visions Vets. We discussed the menu for our picnic with No. 45.
Members had a meeting on June 20 at the DAV Hall. We discussed the NE State Meeting with No. 45.
Non-perishable foods and paper items were donated to New Visions. A homemade meal was served to the vets as well.
For the past three years, members, family, and volunteers have celebrated Flag Day with a picnic for the veterans at the New Visions Homeless Veterans Shelter in Omaha. We donated paper products, plastic silverware, and other items.
This year, we served 21 veterans. Case Manager Eulish Moore, of New Visions, was so appreciative that he presented us with an eagle to display at our meetings. Plans are underway for next year.
Members met April 18 and welcomed agent Don Gillette. He spoke about different kinds of insurance products that best serve individual needs.
We received the Level I Award. The calendar of events was approved.
The State Meeting will take place on September 30 at Holy Ghost Church on 53rd and Q Street. No. 296 members are asked to bring prizes to be given away.
An Honorary Member certificate was sent to Sophie Dunn.
Members discussed the new point system. We need to monitor donations and expenditures more closely until we understand the new system.
Our lodge is able to award two $500 scholarships to members this year.
Plans for the 50 and 75-year membership banquet were discussed. Letters were sent in April.
Our June 20 meeting will be an indoor picnic with No. 45. We will provide pulled pork sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs. Members are asked to bring sides and desserts. Please bring prize donations for the NE State Meeting to the June 20 meeting. Donations can include gift cards, handmade items, or cash.
We will not meet in July, but the August meeting will be an ice cream social. The lodge will provide ice cream and members are asked to bring toppings.
The 50 and 75-year member banquet will be held at Johnny’s Café on May 16 at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The lodge will pay $10 for a member’s meal. Honorees meals are complimentary. The menu is as follows: 7 oz. prime rib $22.92, Husker (thick) pork chop $22.92, two piece fried chicken $16.53. This includes tax and tip. Any Zest member that is entering college or is already in college may apply for a lodge scholarship. The deadline is June 1. Call Fran Riha at 402-731-2360 for information.
